Hair Tonic

by Princess Blarity
(Marietta, GA)

This Hair Tonic is an awesome drink to help your hair grow thicker, stronger, and Healthier. The ingredients come together to provide an awesome mixture of nutrients to support healthy hair growth.

1 aloe vera leaf

1 cucumber

3 stalks of kale

½ onion

3 carrots

You can either juice the aloe leaf or slice it in half and scoop out the gel from the leaf and stir it into the juice.

Aloe plants will grow outside in moderate climates and inside virtually anywhere. Health food stores will carry aloe gel and juice, but you have to be careful to find good quality without large amounts of chemical preservatives.

I have several plants of my own in pots which grow and multiply, which allows for harvesting on a continuing basis. They enjoy the outdoor sun most of the year, but I bring them in during the very coldest months.

And a topical application is as follows:

Juice Carrot and Onion together and massage into your scalp and rinse it out.

Hugh's comment*** Seems like the carrot juice might tint lighter colored hair so be mindful of that.

Nutritional attributes of the ingredients

Cucumbers are alkaline, a diuretic, great cleansers, and contain good amounts of vitamin K, B5, silicon, potassium, and copper. The silicon is exceptional for growing hair and nails.

Kale is an exceptional source of calcium, iron, sulfur, chlorophyll and vitamin A but its beta carotene content far outweighs spinach. Kale is a rich source of anti-cancer chemicals, as are most members of the cruciferous family. Kale is a good cleanser, and known to be anticancer and antiviral. It contains good amounts of vitamin C, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, beta carotene, vitamin K, lutein, copper, magnesium, iron, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, sodium, and zinc.

Onions are antiseptic, anticoagulant; they’re a detoxifier, a diuretic, an expectorant and stimulant. They’re known for their anticancer properties and for being an overall tonic. They contain folate, B1, B6, vitamin C, sulfur, manganese, copper and zinc. The sulfur content may be particularly good for the scalp, hair follicles, and hair.

Carrots are said to enhance blood flow to the eyes improving function and night vision. They are one of the richest sources of beta-carotene and might protect against cancer, dissolve accumulations such as stones and tumors, and help with ear infections, earaches and deafness. Alkalizing, cleansing & nourishing, rich in beta carotene, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and fiber. Perhaps they also enhance blood flow to the hair follicles.

Aloe Vera is considered a superfood, by many people. It’s the gel inside the leaf that is said to contain more than 75 nutrients, 21 minerals, 12 vitamins, 18 of the 21 amino acids used by humans, and 200 active enzymes. Among these super ingredients are special sugars, lignins, anthraquinones, saponins, fatty acids and salicylic acid.

Aloe is well known for its healing ability in treating burns, but apparently that is just the tip of the iceberg. The nutrients found in aloe are paramount to the growth process and healthy function of all the body's organs and systems. These amazing abilities to support a healthy body include support of healthy hair growth.

As a note the skin of the aloe plant is known to cause rapid cleansing of the bowels. It depends how much is taken and on each individuals body and perhaps the plant itself. Some say this reaction is due to the skin being toxic to humans and the body’s response is to eliminate it as soon as possible.

aloe vera skin
by: Anonymous

Aloe vera's skin is toxic so if you are going to take it internally just scrape the gel part and discard the skin. If you don't believe try to research on aloe vera's toxicity.

type of onion
by: Anonymous

What type of onion (ie. white, yellow, red)?

Hugh's reply*** I would say what ever type you have on hand. I think they all contain the oils that are shown to improve hair quality and growth. Some varieties may contain more than others, but I think they'll al work.

Aloe Vera
by: Anonymous

Hi,

Where do you get the Aloe Vera leaf from and does this juice help thinning hair/

Thanks.

Hugh's reply****** You can sometimes get it at the farmers market. You can also buy the plant and grow your own. It can be grown indoors in harsh weather.

The juice is posted as good for the hair so I would think that it would be good for thinning hair.

Aloe leaf?
by: Julie

do you put the whole aloe vera leaf or do you just take out the gel inside?

Hugh's reply*********The recipe says juice it so I would assume the whole leaf. Not really sure how the leaf would juice though. You could try the whole leaf and if that doesn't go well then scrape out the gel into the juice.

How many times would you have to drink this to start seeing a change? 3x/week? And how soon would you start seeing it? Thanks :)

Hugh's reply*****

I would think in a month you will begin to experience the benefits if you were drinking it 5 to 7 days per week.

So, juice all ingredients and drink, or massage into scalp? Or 50/50?

Hugh's reply**** It's a juice recipe. Juice it and drink it. If you want to try the topical application at the bottom then go for it. :-)

So aloe vera, cucumber, and kale are to be juiced and drank?

Concerns
by: Anonymous

I have some serious concerns with this recipe. I've done a bit of research and apparently it is NOT SAFE to juice the entire aloe leaf. This is because this would also mean one consumes the aloe latex, which is the yellow layer just under the outer skin. This layer used to be used in laxatives, but has since been removed from commercial laxatives because it apparently leads to kidney issues.

Also, you are only supposed to use the GEL from a mature plant (3-4 years old).

This is one of the articles I read:
http://www.ehow.com/how_7205264_prepare-aloe-vera-drinking.html

*****Thanks for your contribution. There are conflicting thoughts on this issue an d have been for years. It's really up to each individual to do their own research and do what they feel is best for them.
