I came into the raw lifestyle quite by accident. I was skeptical about the benefits of eating raw (especially since I worked in the pharmaceutical business) but after hearing a doctor talk about nutritional healing on NPR I was curious to see what all the hoopla was about. I had been suffering for a few years from a litany of common complaints – insomnia, fatigue, middle age weight gain, etc. – which the western medical community just chalked up to a normal part of aging or stress.
Once I began to work with an MD/ND who truly believed the old adage of “body heal thyself” I saw incredible changes. He slowly started making adjustments to the foods I was eating. My doctor wasn’t a “rawist” but was certainly a proponent of whole food consumption. He was the first doctor that gave me “reading assignments” as part of my “prescription”. I started reading anything and everything I could get my hands on about healing with living foods. My diet got rawer and rawer. Because I was working with a physician I was able to see my lab tests change over the course of couple of years. My hormone panel balanced, blood chemistry came into line, and my nutritional markers improved significantly. What showed on my lab results was nothing compared to how I began to feel.
Now, five years later I don’t get sick, I have plenty of energy, sleep like a baby, my mind is sharp and I feel a wonderful balanced connection to the earth. My experience left me so disillusioned with western medicine and morally conflicted with selling pharmaceuticals that I left the industry (after over a decade) to spread the message of nutritional healing. What I tell most people is just give it 10 days and see what you think. What’s 10 days out of your life to try something new? You will be amazed at the profound changes you’ll feel.
